The Tactical Urbanism project was presented at the Safe Streets Fest on June 2nd, 2024.

Student Process

Students began this project by cataloging the aspects of intersections that could be improved. They created a list of criteria of things people could easily add with chalk or tempera paint. Lastly, they created DIY Kits to distribute to the community. The kits included the tools needed to visually narrow an intersection.

Tactical Urbanism Intersection Criteria

The Tactical Urbanism project group, working in tandem with the Filtering group, focused on intersections within the West University neighborhood. Using tempera paint they added the following:

  • Crosswalks

  • Bulb outs - to narrow the crossing distance for pedestrians and slow vehicle speed.

  • Art to represent the neighborhood

Tactical Urbanism Installment at the BEST Better Ways Block Party and the intersection of 14th and Mill.

DIY Kits

DIY Kits were created and will be distributed at the BEST-sponsored “Better Ways Block Party” and the LiveMove spring event, “Safe Streets Fest”. The following items come in a DIY Kit:

  • Reflective Tape

  • Chalk

  • Seeds Native to Oregon and Trowel

  • Tempera Paint Powder and Corn Starch
